Tech Tales #4 Precision in Drug Delivery – How Our NanoShuttles Work

At Vector Bioscience Cambridge, our MOF-based nano-shuttle technology is redefining drug delivery by combining precision targeting with controlled release. Delivering a drug to the right location in the body is a complex process, requiring a finely tuned system that balances targeting accuracy, cellular uptake, and release control.

Targeting the Right Cells
The journey begins with our drug-loaded nano-shuttles identifying and binding to specific cell types. This targeting is achieved through surface modifications of the MOFs, such as attaching ligands or antibodies that recognise receptors unique to the target cells. By ensuring that the therapeutic cargo reaches the right cells, our nano-shuttles improve treatment precision while minimising off-target effects on healthy tissues.

Cellular Uptake and Endosomal Escape
Once the nano-shuttle binds to the target cell, it is internalised through a natural cellular process called endocytosis, where the delivery system is engulfed into a membrane-bound vesicle known as an endosome. The next step is critical: the delivery system must escape from the endosome to release its therapeutic payload into the cytoplasm, where it can reach its intended intracellular target. Our advanced design ensures efficient endosomal escape, allowing the drug to perform its intended function inside the cell.

Controlled Drug Release
A key feature of our nano-shuttle technology is its ability to control drug release. Unlike traditional systems that often result in a burst effect—a rapid and uncontrolled release of the drug that can lead to side effects and reduced efficacy—our MOF-based platforms enable a gradual, sustained release of the therapeutic agent. This controlled release ensures steady drug levels over time, improving the treatment’s effectiveness and reducing potential risks for patients.

By combining these features, our nano-shuttles represent a breakthrough in targeted drug delivery. They offer a flexible and efficient platform capable of delivering a wide range of therapies, from small molecules to complex macromolecules, for a variety of conditions.
